What Happens During a Sleep Consultation? A Step-by-Step Look

You’ve been snoring loudly for years. Your partner says you sometimes stop breathing in the middle of the night. Or maybe you’ve already been diagnosed with sleep apnea, but you just can’t tolerate your CPAP machine. You know you need help. But the thought of walking into a new office, meeting a new provider, and explaining your sleep problems feels awkward. Embarrassing, even. But a sleep consultation at Coastal Sleep & TMJ isn’t like a typical doctor’s visit. There are no breathing tubes, no machines strapped to your face, and no judgment. It’s just a conversation with people who genuinely understand what you’re going through. Let’s walk you through exactly what happens, step by step.

What Happens During a Sleep Consultation? in Hampton Roads, VA

Step 1: You Walk Into a Welcoming Space

You’ll be greeted by our front office team at one of our three convenient locations. The vibe is friendly and calm, not cold and clinical. We know you may be tired, frustrated, or nervous. That’s okay. We meet you where you are.

After a quick check-in, you’ll fill out some standard paperwork about your medical history, current symptoms, and any previous sleep studies or treatments. Don’t worry if you don’t have all the answers. We’ll go over everything together.

Step 2: A One-on-One Conversation About Your Sleep

Here’s where the real work begins, and it’s mostly just talking. Dr. Harper or a member of our clinical team will sit down with you in a private room. They’ll ask questions like:

  • How do you feel when you wake up in the morning?
  • Does your partner ever mention that you snore, gasp, or stop breathing?
  • Do you wake up with a dry mouth, sore throat, or headache?
  • Have you ever fallen asleep during the day when you didn’t mean to?

These questions help us understand not just if you have a problem, but how that problem’s affecting your daily life. We also want to hear about any struggles you’ve had with CPAP, if that applies to you.

Step 3: A Gentle Physical Assessment

After talking, we’ll do a brief, non-invasive exam. Dr. Harper will look at your airway, your jaw, your teeth, and your tongue. He’ll check for signs of grinding, crowding, or other physical factors that can contribute to sleep apnea or TMJ issues. This exam is painless and takes only a few minutes.

Based on everything you’ve shared, Dr. Harper will give you his honest, professional opinion. If he suspects sleep apnea, he’ll explain why and what comes next.

Step 4: Your Personalized Path Forward

If a sleep disorder seems likely, the next step is usually a sleep study. That’s the only way to officially diagnose obstructive sleep apnea. We don’t perform the sleep study in our office. Instead, we work directly with trusted sleep medicine physicians in the Hampton Roads area.

There are two types of sleep studies:

  • At-home test: A simple, portable device you wear for one night in your own bed.
  • In-lab study: An overnight stay at a sleep center for more detailed monitoring.

Dr. Harper will help you and your primary care doctor decide which type makes sense for you. He’ll also coordinate with the sleep physician so your care stays connected.

Step 5: If an Oral Appliance Is Right for You

If your sleep study confirms sleep apnea and you’re a candidate for oral appliance therapy, we’ll schedule a follow-up appointment. At that visit, we’ll take precise impressions of your teeth and send them to a specialized dental lab. Your custom appliance will be made just for you.

When it arrives, you’ll come back for a fitting. Dr. Harper will adjust it to make sure it’s comfortable and effective. You’ll learn how to clean it, how to care for it, and what to expect as you start sleeping with it.

Step 6: Ongoing Support, Not Just a One-Time Fix

Treating sleep apnea isn’t a set-it-and-forget-it deal. We schedule regular follow-up visits to monitor your progress, check the fit of your appliance, and communicate with your sleep physician. Your health is a long-term partnership, and we’ll stay in it with you.
